LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The Secretary of the Awaroa Bowling Club (Mr E. Thurlow Field) has received -word that the club has been accepted in membership with the Auckland Provincial Bowling Association. Stewart Bros, are now proceeding with the erection of new shops in con-* crete, near the big store in Garfield road, the work being carried out by Hoist and Osborne. On Thursday the Helensville Hunt i Club will pay a visit to Mr J. Griffin's farm, Kumeu. Members have to meet at the Library and those intending to make the trip are asked to notify the Secretary so that luncheon arrangements can be made. j Some little time ago a Maori sued another native at the local Courthouse and obtained judgment. He wrote to the local constable the other day as follows:—" K—— won't pay me the money he owes, and I now wish to have him run in." A southern farmer, on the question of the hour versus contract system, said his wheat which was thrashed by the hour, cost him 6id per bushel, while that -which was done by contract cost him 4|d per bushel, and the men made better wages when working by contract. When on contract they made 16s to 17$ per day, and when on by the hour they made 9s to 10s per day.
From Friday next the Helensville school will be closed for a fortnight to enable the teachers to attend classes at Auckland for the new physical drill. The Education Board has decided that all teachers must learn the new system of physical instruction for schools. The manual and training classes in cookery and woodwork at tho local school will be held as usual, and Heleißville children who attend these classes will be expected to be present.
Woodward and Hosking, barristers and solicitors, of Auckland, have arrane-ed to visit Helensville on Sat-
urdays, also on Sale days and Magistrate's Court day. Mr Hoaking will attend at the Library on Saturday noxt, August 2nd. Tho firm a"re taking up the business connection formerly carried on by Mr H. J. Durham, whn has now ceased to visit Helensville. The office hours will bo from 10.15 a.m to 3 p.m. Mr W. H. Hutchmson has been appointed district agent for the firm.
