Helensville Bowling Club.
A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION
A Smoke Concert held under the auspices of the above club last Friday evening, at which the competition p.rizf-s won during the season just closed were presented, passed off very successfully, Mr J. McLeod (pre* sident) was in the chair, and there was a good muster of members and visitors. The Chairman tendered apologies for absence of Oapt. Ross, Capt. Sellars and Mr Masters. After the usual loyal toast had been honored a programme of songs, music, presentations and toast list was proceeded with. An ample supply of good quality refreshments was at the disposal of the afsenibfy, and met with due appreciation, The Chairman expressed pleasure in making presentations to Messrs Park and A. Harris, winners of the competitions, of handsome pairs of bowls, which had been given by Messrs Bishop and Jenkins (Auckland). Both recipients suitably responded, after which the health of- the donors was honored and they were accorded the thanks of the Club. Mr Bishop I suitably replied, in the course of which he announced his intention of strongJy supporting the Awaroa club. During the evening several of the speakers expressed regret that there were now two clubs in the town, and it was said that two clubs would not be able to keep going. The toast oi " The Visitors " was replied to by Messrs Walters, Carter and Garry, the latter concluding his remarks by proposing the " Helensville Club," in replying to which the Chairman explained all that had been done in connection with the selection of a site for a green. He showed that the club had acted in accordance with its rules and that what had been done was fair and square. He said it was only natural that the club should be guided by the vote of its financial members. They had selected a site for a green in a central position, and he defied anyone to say that he had not done as fair for one end of Helensville as the other. Practically all the toasts were supported with the refrain " For they are Jolly Grood Fellows," in addition to the usual cheering. Among those observed were " The Army and Navy," proposed by Mr Bishop, and replied to by Messrs A. Harris and J. A. Wilson ; *' Banking Institutions " (The Chairman), responded to by Mr Caiter ; " Local Industries " (Mr Simcock), replied to by Messrs Garry and Eimmer for Dairy industiy and the Chairman for Farming interests ; '•The Visitors,"proposed by Chairman, responded to by Messrs Walters and Garry ; " Kindred Societies " (Mr G McEwin). replied to by Messrs Cucksey for rugby, Park for" cricket and G.
