Epidemic of Chickenpox.
The epidemic of chickenpox, wMch is of a virulent typo and closely re-» sembies smallpox, has become widespread among the Maoris up Whangareiwa}-. The Health Department is taking active measures to combat the disease. Additional medical officers are being appointed to carry out vac-* cination, which is the only efficient means of protection, and the public are asked to co-operate with the Department in checking the disease; which is generally being treated as smallpox.
The local District Health officer (Dr Meinhold) has received instructions to carry out a vaccinating campaign. He has to visit the native settlements for this purpose, and any natives who refuse to be vaccinated^ are to be forbidden to travel by boat, coaches or railway or enter public places.
All children attending schools have to be vaccinated, and Dr Meinhold wnl attend at Helensville school on Friday morning .at ten o'clock. Europeans as well as Maoris are advised to get vaccinated in view of the Sydney epidemic, and the doctor will be found in his surgery daily from 11 to 12 o'clock for this purpose and 6 to' 7 p.m., except on Sunday.
