A very successful Smoke Concert was held in the Hall on Saturday evening, by the householders and friends of Mr T. Manuell. This gentleman has, for a number of years, been Chairman of the School Committee, but he has now decided to retire from public life. Mr T Hooper (the present Chairman of the School Committee), on behalf of those in attendance, presented Mr Manuel with a comfortable arm-chair, and expressed a hope that he would be spared to enjoy its comfort for many years. . Mr Manuell said that the gift had come as a surprise to him, and he wondered what he had done to deserve it. He would never forget their kindness. A ring was formed round the guest of the evening and the company sang " Auld Lang Syne " and " He's a jolly good fellow," followed by hearty cheers. The meeting then dispersed. I believe there is a substantial balance left over from the expenses of the chair and concert, and it has been decided to present Mr Manuell with a pipe ; so that, in his declining years, he can sit in his chair and smoke the pipe of peace. - A large deputation of settlers waited on Mr Coates M. P. at the railway station on Tuesday. Mr H. Hooper was selected as spokesman, and in a few well chosen words, drew the member's attention to the urgent need of a goods shed and cattle yard at Makarau, and'otherjnecessary improvements in different parts of the district. The deputation also asked that Mr Coates would use his influence to get Makarau made an advertised stopping place for the express train ; for at present, though the express stops here both morning and afternoon to allow of passing the daily train, yet passengers cannot book to or from Makarau. Mr Coates considered that the requests of the deputation were reasonable and necessary, and promised to do all in his power towards granting them. 21-6-13.
