THE LATE MR BRYCE.
The Hon, John Bryce, whose death was reported from Wanganui last week, was a sterling type of the pioneer colonist of courage, industry, and integrity, mho played an import! ant part in laying down the foundation on which the structure of our national greatness is raised. He was called '•Honest Jolid Bryce" in the days when.'he played his part in the political life of this country, and even long before that, and though we were almost invariably opposed to him in the political sense, we frankly concede to his memory the acknowledgment that this designation was a mildly-express-ed and insufficient recognition of his honesty of. character, purpose, and effort. Like and character, purpose and effort. Tike his party chief, the late Sir Harry Atkinson, Mr John Bryce had been brought up in th* old Conservative school, aud viewed with something more than grave suspicion the democratic spirit that has grown so rapidly with broadening age.
