THE HOLIDAYS.
Exceptionally favourable weather prevailed throughout Xmas Eve and Xrnas Day, but on Boxing Day several small showers of raiu fell, but did not last long enough to upset holiday makers to any oxtont.
Xmas Eve was a very busy one for the shopkeepers, all being satisfied with the amount of business done. The town was well crowded till late in the evening.
Xmas-Day was very quite, but on Boxing Day everyene was astir, wending their ways to the different picnic grounds, and sports gathering. A largo number went to Pouto where a Regatta was held, and Motutara attracted picnic parties, while the river was alive with launches. At the Springs the Tennis Lawns and Bowling Greens were well patronised both on Xmas Day and Boxing Day, by visitors and local residents.
So far in this district there have been no accidents reported to mar the holidays.
The Auckland Racing Club's sum> ruer meeting opened in ideal weather on Boxing Day, and Oup Day passed off with two records being established, one for the amount of money passed through the totalisator, and another for the attendance, which exceeded 30,000, It is estimated that the special race trains carried over 8000 peo pie to Elleslie, which is considerably over the usual number. There was a brilliant gathering on the course, and the racing throughoxit was of an interesting character. The big event of the 'lay, the Auckland Cup, was won by Mr T. H. Lowry's gelding Bobrikoff, and the victory oi the Hawkes Bay horse evoked great enthusiasm.
