YOUNG AUCkLANDER DROWNED
Theie wae a tragic ending to the opening of the Dargaville Bowling Club's season last Thursday. A party of Auckland bowlers who went io Dargaville by the steamer Tang-ihua, which was specially chartered for their convenience, were returning to "Helensville to catch the train for Auckland, when, six miles from the Heads, one of them, Mr Eoddy McGregor, the well-known footballer, who had remainod on deck when the others went below, was missed, having apparently gone overboard.
No trace of the missing man could be found. The steamer put back to Aratapu, and the party came on to Helensville by the Aotea,
The late Mr. McGregor was a very popular figure in Au3kland sporting circles, his bright, happy disposition winning ior^ him the warm friendship of all with whom he came into close personal touch. He was born in Auckland a little over thirty years ago, and was the youngest son of Mr. Charles McGregor, formerly a contractor, and for many years m charge of road, works for the Auckland City Council. He played in the Graf ton senior football team when a lad of 16 or 17, and was chosen to represent Auckland in the forward division in 1900 and 1901. He retired from active participation in the sport in the latter year, but kept up his interest in the old club till its disbandment. In yachting circles he was also widely known, and for several years he sailed various crafts in the waters of the VVaitemata. He joined the Carlton Bowling Club four or five years ago, and proved a very successful skip at many tournaments. Deep sympathy is expressed w;th his parents in the sad loss which they haVe suffered.
