Sir Joseph and Lady Ward, Miss Eileen and. Master Pat Ward left Wellington last Thursday for the South, en route for England. They return to New Zealand in May next. Sir Joseph Ward explained the objects of his trip, incidentally disposing of a good deal of speculative gossip regarding the matter. •• lam going Home on a pleasure trip chiefly, and partly on business, "he said. "During my official life, though I visited Engfand many tftnes, I had no opportunity to attend to anything but purely official work. Now lam clear of responsibility of all kinds, lam availing myself of the change to enjoy six months of comparative leisure, rest and change. It will be my first long holiday in tin active life of 45 years. As to the future of tbe Liberal party Sir Joseph is not at all pessimistic on the subject. "I do not attach any special importance to the suggestion that the party has gone to pieces. We get accustomed to'adverse critisms, and I feel confident that the Liberal party in the country is just as keen as ever. There is only one way in which the position between the parties can be settled, and thit is at the ballot box, a test to which our opponents in power have not yet submitted. They will find the Liberals of New Zealand as capable as ever of putting up a fight when the time comes."
