PUBLIC WORKS.
The Public Works Statement was laid on the table of the House of Representatives by the Minister of Public Works (Hon. W, Fraser) on the 18th inst. The Minister stated that the first consideration was to give the settlers access to their holdings by means of roads. The value of tho railways was of secondary importance if the settlers could not reach them. The unexpected balance of authorities for roads and bridges on March 31st last, and further authorities to July 31st, amounted to £b12,163, Applications for roads and bridges now amount to H million. The total amount for the ouriont year would be £734,500 ; the total voted last year was £838,000. The provision for railway construction is £847,000, being £83,789 more than was spent on new railways last year. The estimated expenditure for public works for the current year amounts to £2,748,000, leaving an estimated balance of £884,580. North;« Auckland Main Trunk;— During last financial year the total expenditure on this lino was £78,022, for the current year a vote of £80,000 is proposed. THE ESTIMATES.
