MAUNGATUROTO

(Own Oobrespondent.)

A concert and dance was held in the Public Hall on Friday, 25th inst, in aid of the local cricket club. The takings were small, only about £6 being collected. This was no doubt due to the inclement state of the weather. A very fair programme had been prepared, songs being rendered by Misses M. Cullen, IST. Mooney, R. Byrne, and A. Williams, and Messrs Anderson and Allen; a. duet by Mrs Flowers and Mr Allen; pianoforte duet by Misses Stewart; recitations by Miss E. Cullen and Master Arnold Curtis. After the concert the hall was cleared, and dancing was kept up till about 1 a.m. Cricket and tennis has replaced football here. Cricket practise commenced last Saturday, and the Tennis Club open their courts on Saturday afternoon next. The roads here are still in a very bad condition; in many places they are practically impassable. We will all welcome the summer when it comes. Work on the railway is fairly quiet at present, but it is expected to open another length of about two and a-half miles for construction shortly. The small tunnel at Bickerstaffe is now just about finished. The Otamatea Bridge is well in hand and should be finished in obout five or six months. With the completion of the bridge it should not be long before the rails are laid to the Bickerstaffe station. Shearing operations are in full swing here now. Owing to the cold weather we have been having the shearers report there being very little grease up yet, otherwise the wool is'in prime condition, and should command good prices. The local Sports Club are again making preparations for their annual sports meeting, which is to be held this year on Friday, December 27th. A strong working committee has been elected, and there is every prospect of a successful meeting.
