Captain Dawson, one of Kaukapakapa's old pioneer settlers died at the Helensville Private Hospital last Sunday afternoon, aged 82 years. The remains were taken to Kaukapakapa yesterday afternoon where the funeral took place. Next week we will be able to give further particulars of his life.

Association informs us that. if the number of new prizes given for the forthcoming show is any indication to its success, that is already assured., as quite a number of extra donations from different sources have been received making the total up-to-date over £25 more more that previous year. Sixty eight men were entombed in the North Mount Lyell mine (Tas« mania) as the result of a fire which broke out at noon on Saturday, in the 700 ft level. The fire resulted from the slowing out of the waterpump. Six bodies have been recovered. Forty men are supposed to be alive at the 1000 ft level, but must be in a very bad condition thiough entombment since Saturday.
The troubled state of the labour market as sndicated by a partial strike
on Monda}' by general labourers, as a protest against the action of the local bodies and employers who had refused to take on the men who had left off work last Thursday. The consequence is that there is a halfaiid half holiday among the general labourer s in and around Auckland, and about 400 meu are still out.
In response to tho appeal of the Waitemata Fruitgrowers' Association, backed by +he Dominion Fruitgrowers' Association, in respect to the carriage of strawberries and soft fruits in season, the Minister of Railways (Hon. W. H. Herris) has promised to attach a fruit van to the Wellington express from Auckland if tho fruitgrowers can guarantee not less than five tons of fruit per day.
On Monday last the managers' residence at the Kaipara Dairy Factory, occupied by Mr A. J. Garry and family, had a. rather narrow escape of being destroyed by fire. It appears that the curtains caught alight in one of the bedrooms, and in a flash, were in a blaze catching the blind, and the linoleum, but was got under before going further. Besides the articles mentioned aud the wallpaper being badly singed no other serious damage was done. The loss is estimated at about £5, but would have been serious to Mr Garry aud the Company if the fire had not been" discovered in time, as the house is new while Mr Garry's household effects are also new. The furniture is insured with the New Zealand Insur* ance Company.
The lady football enthusiasts of Parakai have decided to tender to the winners of the lvaipara Rugby Union challenge caps, the Parakai Club, and footbalLors generally, a social evening to show their appreciation of their success in the field. This social is in fulfillment of a promise made by the ladies ol the district as an incentive to the team to win the caps and au enjoyable evening iv their honour. How far the social loomed out in the strife we cannot say, but endeavours to please their lady friends and ardent barrackers no doubt went a long way towards the success attained. A strong team of ladies are on the com> mitt'ee with Miss M. Nicholls as secretary, aud a good game is assured, as they are not spanug any efforts to win success. The social will be held in the Parakai Hall on Wednesday evening, kick off- at 8 o'clock, and there should be a large gathering from all round the district.
