As will be seen by nctice in our advertising column the Returning Officer, Mr W. Ryall Fosbroke, Town appoints the HelensBoabjd ville Town Board Office Election as the place, and Wednesday, September 1 Lth, before noon, as the day on which he will receive nominations for the election of five members at the biennial election of the Helensville Town Board which takes place on Wednesday, 18th inst. The roll of those entitled to vote is now being printed, and the supplementary which closed to day will be put into the printers hands straitway. The outgoing Board, Messrs Jas. Stewart, Jas. McLeod, J. A. Wilson, A, Becroft and R. C. Hammond, have made many improvements in the town during their term, besides laying out the greater part of £1000 grant on the Hot Springs grounds, and securing a grant of £10000 for drainage and water, which is now in progress, and which the new Board will have to complete duiing their term. The Town District has undobtedly grown during the last few years, and every succeeding Board has greater and more important problems to face, than its predecessor, and ratepayers should endeavour to elect the most competent of those offering their services, to carry on the work of the town to the best advantage with the financies at their disposal. We opine that one of the first items of progress to take the attention of the new Board should be the proper lighting of the town, either by gas or electric light, with a plant sufficiently large to supply the Hot Springs house? and grounds ; also to procure fire^fighting appliances. Then there is the Town Hall question to face, and—but, although we would like to see other progressive moves, we, like most townsD&ople do no expect those controlling our rates to bar the progress of the district by over expenditure, As this election is likely to cover an important two years in the history of the township, we would suggest that the candidates should call a meeting and each lay their views before the electors.
