OBITUARY.

It was with deep regret that the news of the death of Mr. Thomas McEwin, Licensee of the Kaipara Hotel, was received throughout the district last Sunday mo'.'ning. Mr McEwin who a few weeks ago had to take to his bed, although his ailments were not considered of a very serious nature, was doing well up till the end of the week, when a sudden change took place, and although able to converse with memb3rs of his family at 10 o'clock, on Saturday evening, ,he suddenly but quitely passed away 20 minutes later. The deceased who was 62 years of age being born in Geelong, Victoria, in 1850, came to New Zealand, witlf his parents, in the barque " Gazelle," at the age of 6, and after residing in Matakana for 13 years went to Auckland where he was familiarly known and much respected as Tom. McEwin of the City Buffet, later he resided in Papakura, for a number of years, and eventually came to Helensville 5 years ago yesterday, the day of his funeral. He was always to the front in helping any movement appertaining to the advancement of the district, and took a great interest in sport generally. Mr McEwin was a member of the Waitemata and Duke of Albany (Helensville) Masonic Lodges; and also a Forester of long standing, being one of the founders of Court Zealandia, No. 4741, and after filling various offices was elected District Chief Ranger in 1874-75, and took an active interest in the working of the Order.

The funeral took place at Papakura on Tuesday, the remains leaving by the morning train being followed by a large number of Brother Masons and Foresters and townspeople, and on • arrival at Newmarket station was joined by numbers from Auckland and Papakura to show their last^respects to an old and honoured friend. Numerous wreaths and letters of condolence were received from- all parts of the Dominion by Mrs McEwin and family. Deceased leaves a wife, one daughter, Mrs Jago, and 3 surviving sons, George, Jack and Stewart (Tui), who are left to morn their loss.
