The Helensville Theft Case.

PRISONER'S DASH FOR IJB^

ERTY.

On Friday evening, July 19th inst., Boston Road and thereabouts was the scene of a highly interesting sprint match, the course and distance not being nominated. Constable Cannon had landed at Mouut Eden railway station in charge of a young fellow from Helensville named James Woodward, alias Robt Brydon, who was arrested on a charge of stealing £30 from the dwelling of James Hunter. When, he got to Boston Road the prisoner swung on his heel and bolted, making for Normandy Road, where there are several quarries and some growth on the hillside, which would afford excellent cover. The constable with the military name at once limbered up and set out in pursuit. He is an athletic fellow, and so is the prisoner, and the race through the gathering darkness was quite exciting. Slowly but surely the constable gained on his quarry till, at the end of a 500 yards burst, he drew level and won the pleasure of escorting his captive to Mount Eden Gaol. Woodward was brought up at the Police Court, Auckland, on Friday, 26th July, and remanded to appear at Helensville tomorrow.
