PARAKAI

LADIES' LEAP YEAR SOCIAL. The weather last Thursday evening proved very disappointing to the ladies who had been preparing for the above function, but notwithstanding the heavy showers that fell during the evening about 50 couple were present and a very enjoyable and one of the most successful socials was held. The large committee of lady workers had spared neither time or energj in preparing for the affair, the floor being well polished, while the hall decorations showed feminine taste, although they had to fall back on the sterner sex to drive the nails into the nikau palms and pungas which were artistically arranged on the walls, (of course under their direction, man knows nothing), the windows being nicely draped with lace curtains, and a dado of red muslin along the walls, relieved with flowers, and two prettily decorated baskets hanging from the ceiling finished off a pretty interior picture which "was added to by the dainty dresses of dancers. The stage was also made cosy to receive (on this occasion) the male chaperons, who looked chic in white ties, etc. Tho ladies made the engagements for the first half of the programme, and without shyness revelled in the novelty, and from the grand march onward a very enjoyable time was spent. The Masters of Ceremonios Mesdames Newman and R. Barnes, and Misses E. Vercoe and Gr. Aitkenhead carried out their duties well, and members of the committee amongst their other duties collected quite a sum in fines from the gentlemen -who essayed to walk the floor without an escort, while Misses W. McLeod and I. McDonald jointly did the clerical work of a very successful undertaking. The music supplied by Misses Little and Donovan was excellent, Misses H. Channon and A. Spinley supplying extras. The dainty supper handed round by the ladies was all that could be desired and much appreciated, those having this in hand sparing no pains to suit the tastes of all.
