THE RAILWAY BALL.

The first of the annual balls took plane in the Foresters' Hall on Friday evening last when the Railway Fifth Plain and Fancy Dress function was held, and proved as on previous occasions a very successful affair, there being over 90 couples present. The Railway committee set a high standard for future cemmittees to follow in. the way of hall decorations, and appointments. The walls were covered with, nikau palms relieved with, mitrows and a dado of red and green, the windows being hung with curtains, while at intervals shone out red and green lamps, and across the centre were streams of flags; the stage being set out with comfortable seats for chaperons, at one side being a semaphore on which the dancer were denoted. The grand march in which 68 couple took part was led off at 8.80 and the ballroom presented a picture with the pretty dresses of the ladies, and the joyful hours passed all too swiftly. Mr Meredith's or chestra diew melody from the masters of music, and there were no wallflowers, the M.C.'s, Messrs T. Callaher, X, Smith, A. Payne and P. Curtis doing their duty too well to allow of anyone being overlooked. The supper, to which 86 couple sat down, was supplied "by Messrs Bussy and Leach, who gave every satisfaction. Altogether the guests had a lovely time, and committee, and officers are to be warmly congratulated on the splendid success, while Mr A. M. Hammond, as secretary, is to be commended on the manner he discharged his onerous duties. The fancy dresses although not numerous were well characterised and pretty. Mr J. G.
