FOOTBALL.
The first matches under the auspices of the newly formed Kaipara Rugby .Union were played on Saturday last in rather boisterous weather, even for football, and the four teams'iafcing^^* part showed that rugger is being re^^ yived in the district this season, which is due in a great measure to new blood such as Mr Oucksey (an old Auck» land rep.) ]\fr A. J. Garry and Mr Tui McEwin and others throwing their efforts in the revival of the game, while the players of the district are enthusiastically following the fresh lead, as Saturday's and Mon-» day's matches proved. WOODIIILL V. PaKAKAI. The match between these two teams was played on the Wharepapa ground. The former team which is practically a new one, faced their stronger opt ponents with a sure defeat in front of them, but pluckly stuck to the game right through, suffering defeat b^ the Parakai bojs by 27 points to nil. There is no doubt that as the season goes on WoodhiJl will be able to give a better display, as they have the material, but require practice. Mr Downer acted as referee.
Otakaxiki v. Hjeleksuill*. This match played on the Helensville Show Ground was a fairly good one for the first bout of the season and some good play was shown by members of both teams. The Otakanini boys proved the quickest to make use of chances, and succeeded in winning by G points to nil, after a hard game. Buah and 1 Brown secured the tries. Mr W. Rimmer acted as referee. GRAFTON v. HELENS VILLK. On Monday a team representing the Grafton Club (Auckland) paid a visit to Helensville and tried conclusions with a team representing the Kaipara Rugby Lnion. The visitors arrived by the 10.10 a.m. express, and were met by members of the Union and were straitway taken for a run in Stewart Bro's motor lorry to the Hot Springs, where they indulged in a bath. On returning to the township they put up at the Kaipara Hotel, where they were entertained to a dinner, laid out in the host's usual nrst-class style. The game commenced at 1.30 p m there being a goodly number of spec tators, the gate receipts being oW £o 10s The teams captained respec* tively by brers and Wilson, soon going, and from the start it was aparent that an even game would be the^result, and so "it proved the visitors winning by 3 points (1 try) to ml, the score being made ii the last quarter. There was a strong wind Uowing right through the game and with the wind m their favour the home team had the best of the first quarter, but failed to score In the second quarter the visitors took the aggressive and kept the blues even busier on the defensive than they had been compelling them to force Twit A determined rush hy y McLeod" relieved a liffle, but WrY oKed to nalt-way, and the werfsM attacking at halftime.
