NARROW ESCAPE FROM FIRE.
The Terminus Hotel had a narrow escape from being burnt down on Monday afternoon last, It appears the chef had put some fat in the oven to render down, leaving a small fire ; later a servant came in to do some ironing and put un a good fire with the result that the fat got over-heated and ignited, and the whole of the kitchen be • came enveloped in flames. Had it not been for the presence of mind of Jim Davy, who threw a few pounds of salt on the flames, it would no doubt have been a serious affair. As it was the wall and ceiling were badly scorched. At the time of the accident there was a shortage of water on the pre^ mises, the water being supplied to the hotel through the railway resevoir which was running short. This is the second time sinco the Water-works Loan was carried, that there havo been outbreaks in hotels, which were only saved through" emergency preventatives being used in time. * We would again urge the Town Board to consider the purchase of fire-fighting implements to work in with the water supply which should be gone on with at once.
