SOCIALISM
Two addresses on the above were given in Wellington recently—one by the Rev Mr Blamires, tho other by a Mr Hartley of Bradford England.
The former gentleman said ; Today there were men preaching Socialism who did not know the first thing about it. Such men made rambling statements, putting poople astray, and giving them wroug ideas. Unless Socialism wa<3 identified with Christianity, it was not true Socialism and the sooner Christian Socialism be--came the faith of tho entire community the better it would be for the mankind. The Socialism that cut at the roots of the belief in God was one that cut at tho home-life, whether it be in tho palace or the cottage. Mr Hartley who is a member of the Bradford City Council, gave instances of how municipal enterprise, or collective ownership, had worked there. He said that municipal tramways were Socialistic rather than active Socialism.
They provided an example of collettive owners lip with capitalistic management. Tho idea of profit from municipal works was ontirely mistaken. Land values in New Zealand were ten timos as high as they woro in England, and yet this was said to bo a socialistic country. Tho powers of the city as well nsthe Avhole of the capital of tho city should be used and controlled by its citizens alone. Socialism did not mean the dividing up of all available wealth and property as some people imagined. Only by collective ownership could people secure the rights to Avlrich they were entitled.
