SIR GEORGE GREY'S NARROW ESCAPE.
The following, written by the late Mr W. Goldrich, an old identity well-known throughout the Kaipara, has been handed us for publication, having been found amongst his belongings.; written after reading in the " Auckland Weekly News" of Sir George Grey's narrow escape of being eaten by a tribe of Maoris: — "The tale I read this day in Weekly News Do rouse within my soul the slumbering muse Which makes me shudder as I contemplate How near Sir Georgie Grey was to being ate, The very thought, good life—it is so horrid Makes the sweat run cold upon my forehead. " Should such .a fate befall some low-bred knave In the public eyes it would not look so grave, But for a greater man'to be thus devoured Upon whose head an Empire's honours showered Before whose face poor mortals held their breath . ( .. ,■ - Upon whose caprice oft'hung a life or death. •' . >■ . - Ah! Vain, vain man, once mighty in his pride, .'"..' ■ Behold him now w'itliin that kaupa fried. See now, he eat,' and lo! behind yon log A Maori casts , him forth to feed his dog, Who in his turn ejects him bit by bit Then leaves him in disgust, a twice disgested—hush!
