One of the accusations made by the Reform party against the Administration. "That money voted for the pui> poses of public works had been held back," receives an emphatic denial from the clerk to the Huntly Town Board (Mr Fred, Harris). The Board recently decided to expend £3000 on road improvements, £1000 of which was authorised by the Public Works Department on the basis of a £1 for £2 subsidy. The fir9t instalment of £100 was voted for this purpose by Parliament in the Estimates during last session barely three months ago. At the present time the Board have received authority from the Department to proceed with works the cost of which amouuts to £?895 14s 3d—practically the whole of the work. Mr Harris further points out that this was not a spasmodic effort on the part of the Government for political purposes, as he has had continual proof from the Department that as soon as the local Board wanted any authorised money it had been forthcoming.
