THE WAIMAUKU HALL
PIANO
TO THE EDITOIt,
Sir, —I think the Waimauku Hall committee have treated Mrs Vincent Kerr-Taylor very shabby, both she and her husband helped in many, many ways; yet just because Mrs Taylor does not want to help pay for a £45 second-hand piano, the rest of the committee want to make her. She says she told the committee plainly before they bought the piano, that they were to clearly understand if they paid £45 for a second-hand instrument, she would not help pay for it. That was what I call straightforward. She showed me a letter the hall secretary wrote her. the following week (she was still on the committee, mind you) stating that all the rest of the committee were thoroughly satisfied with the piano, and she must forward all monies she had. Up to this time not one on that committee would recognise a piano fund; there was no recognised treasurer, and the committee were not giving one penny towards the instrument. Because the majority want it they think they can make the minority PAY for it. I admire Mrs Taylor's pluck (I call it) for sticking to her principals. She is not "dog in the manger" style either. I have not met ANY one yet whom she has tried to influence against paying for the second-hand piano; she/says each one may please themselves with their own money. JBuring a conversation I had with fher about it, she said " if the committee valued her friendship at \the rate of a second hand piano ■it was best to know it; she didn't •intend belittling herself quarrelling over it. Those who wanted it could pay for it." Surely she need not collect or help if she didn't want it. One man can take a horse to water, one hundred cannot make him drink. If the committee bought it knowing she would not help pay, they have no right to say unjust things the way they are. lam, etc., Musical.
