XMAS HOLIDAYS.
Saturday last being Christmas Eve all business people were prepared for the usual rush. During the morning and up till about 4 o'clock (storekeepers were busy and everything argued well for a record Xmas trade, but Old Sol went behind the clouds early in the evening and rain fell in torrents, continuing right up to 11 o'clock. Few braved the elements, but the majority had to bow to the weather, and those of tender age had to remain, with their guardians at home, for which reason the success of the night suffered from the tradesmens point of view.
The inwards and outwards trains were crowded with visitors to and from the city, while the steamers arriving brought a large number of passengers on holiday bent. The last train on Xmas Eve was over three-quarters of an hour late arriving in Heltonsville.
Probably owing to the weather the local hot springs were not so well patronised as was anticipated during the Xmas holidays, but if the weather is fine a number of visitors are expected during the New Year.
