PUBLIC LIBRARY.

A rather awkward predicament was narrowly averted in convection with a No-licence meeting in a prominent Marlboro ugh town quite recently. It was a lady lecturer, and the'usual decanter of pure water Jay on the table, but at a critical moment the glass was missing. A gentle man went off to a neighbouring house for the loan of a tumbler, and was inuocentfy handed one in the dark bearing1 the legend " Drink Watson's' Whisky." .Some fortunate inspiration tempted the messenger to glance at the glass before placing it in full view oi the audience, and the perilous situation was saved.

A rceeting of the committee was held in the Library Room on Friday evening last, when there were present: —Messrs A. J. Hill (chairman), W. Laird, E. Driscoll, J. C. Rimmer, W. B. Card, and C. H. Spiuley (secretary) The minutes of the previous meeting wer N e read and confirmed.

Accounts amounting to £4 10s 8d were passed for payment It was decided to number and label the books of the Library, and the secretary was instructed to request subscribers to return all books by Saturday, October 21st for that purpose. It was resolved "That an account be opened at tho Helensville Post Office Saving Bank in the names of Messrs C. H. Spinley (secretary), and B. Berrnau (treasurer), for the funds of the Helensville Public Library, Mr W. A. Laird's offer to act as Librarian on Tuesday evenings between the hours of 7.30 and 8.30 was unanimously accepted, It was resolved that a concert to conclude with a dance in aid of tho Public Library Building Fund, be held on November 17th. Messrs J. E. Page, A. J. Hill, H. Stringer, and J. C. Rirumer were appointed a concert committee.

It was arranged that the Library be open from 7.30 to 8.30 on the 21st inst. to receive books preparatory to labeling and numbering. During the times when the Library is not open subscribers can procure the key at Mr Berman's shop as heretofore.
