THE Kaipara Advertiser. AND WAITEMATA CHRONICLE. WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 27, 1911. LOAN PROPOSAL CARRIED. VOTE. FOR PROGRESS.

Last Thursday a Poll was taken for the Loan of £10000 for a drainage and water supply for the Helensviilr Town District. Since the meeting on Monday, the 11th inst.,'the ratepayers had shown more interest in the preposal than heretofore; groups were noticed -within the vicinity of the polling booth watching the proceedings, and conversing quietly on'tne probable result of the poll. About -7 o'clock a fair number had gathered in front of the Town B^oard Office waiting the result, anxious to learn whether the majority were for '• pi ogress " or " stag->----nation;'-' some (very few)jjaiadtngTffi** old bogey of "mci eased taxation.'' j3h.Q-utl-5* after 7.30 the returning officer (Mr W. Ryall Eosbroke) appeared and declared the result of the Poll as follows : —

' For the proposal ..' 647 Against the proposal 30. Informal 2.

Majority for the proposal 34

The total of votes on the roll is 161; of which 96 were recorded, 31 are accounted for as either absent or deceased, leaving the balance not accounted for, exactly the same as the majority for the proposal, 34. As the figures show, the majority is almost •• two to one, which points to the fact that the ratepayers of Helensville are anxious for improved drainage and- a water supply, while at the same time show* ing their confidence in the present Board. The cliairman of the Board informs us that Mr Munro Jackson, the engineer who is entrusted witli the carrying out of the schemes, will be in Helensville this week, and that the preparatory work will be started straightway, and as the laying of the mains are to he commenced at several points it is expected that they.will be all ready by the time the catchment is finished.

The inauguration of these absolutely

necessary conveniences (water and drainage), marks an epoch in the history ot our town, and will, wc are couiident, be the commencement of.a wave of progress through the influx of papulation, besides' jnittiDg hundreds of pounds into the pockets of those fortunate enough to be tho poss-, essors of property before the instalation. "Surely a good haul is woith the price of tlie bait, and with the proved certainty of the good catches in ovcry other place which has had the pluck to risk a ha'porth of bait, why should wo hesitate." Now for a pro-
