Lyell, December 6
A body was found floating in the Buller River today. It is unrecognisable, but, is supposed by the clothes, belt etc,, to be the missing man, Smithers, who was drowned at Fern Flat on the 3rd October last.

Alan Scott, manager for the Midland Railway Company, has returned from the West C mst. He has made arrangements for placing the contractors for the first section from B unnerton to Teremakau in legal possession of the land required for the line. This contract has been divided into 11 sub-cou-trac's, for which tenders will be called forthwith. By February the work will be in full swing all along the section.

Captain Sinclair, of the ship Waimea, which left Auckland for England seven* 1 days before the Tarawera eruption, writes tohisfiiends here stating that when GOO miles from New Zealand showers of blinding dust fell, covering the ship.
Bluff, December 3,
The Harbour Board tug leaves this afternoon for the Snares, to search for castaways supposed to have been wrecked there.
Invercargill, December 4,
James M'Donald, baker, aged 66, living at Lumsden, attempted suicide last night by taking strychnine. He was found in convulsions at the hotel where he was stopping, and quite stiff. Salt and water was administered as an emetic, and this morning he was so far recovered as to be able to come by train to the Hospital. M'Donald took an overdose, and will probably get better. He says he is sorry he did not use the razor. The cause of the act is family trouble.
Dunedin, December 2. A child named Hannon was knocked down on the 30th by a horse bolting. He has died from the effects of the injuries leceived. A verdict of accidental death was returned.
A peculiar sporting case came before Judge Williams to-day. While Langley, bookmaker, was paying over £9O won in a bet on the New Zealand Cup, £42 of which was to go to Morrison, and £4B to Miller, a bailiff named Brown seized £75 of the money. The question was whether Langley had paid over the sum or not. The Judge decided that £42 10s of the money belonged to Morrison, and was rightfully seized by the bailiff; and the balance should go to Miller.

In the divorce case of Mills v. Mills and Ferrier, the Court to-day granted a decree absolute.
Ashburton, December 2.
A man named Mulne returning home after work yesterday evening found his wifo under the influence of liquor. An altercation ensued, and the woman attacked him with a carving knife, severely wounding him in the wrist and knee.
Hawera, December 2, The result of the prosecution against It eland is that the rape charge is withdiawn and that he was this morning committed for trial on the charge of perjury.
Hoani Taipiia (Oiaki), Tairua (Patea), Henare Kaihn (Waiuku), Wirerau Te Wheoro, and Sydney Tawliangi have been nominated for the Western Maori district. The show of hands was in favour of Hoani. A poll was demanded by Te Wheoro, and the election will come off on the 23rd. In addressing the electors Sydney Tawhangi promised not to accept his honorarium if elected.

A number of young men in the Waikato have started for Teetalpa goldfiidds.
An agent is reported as missing. The liabilities are pat at £2OO.

A little boy named Herbert Fringe was drowned at Tuki Tuki while bath-
Wellington, December 3. Sir Julius Yogel returned to Wellington to-day.
Thu four sea-lions recently brought from the Auckland Islands by the Hinemoa will be shipped Home by the Tongariro, which leaves here on the 16th inst. For their subsistence on the voyage a large quantity of frozen fish will he taken, and the supply is to be packed in about fifty boxes.

It, is stated that the hours of the civil servants will shortly be extended, and that from January Ist clerks will be required to attend from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with an hour for lunch.
SAD BATHING FATALITY. Invercargill, November 30,
A fatal bathing accident occurred this afternoon. Three young men were out boating on the Waihopai, near Gladstone, when it was proposed to bathe. Two, Thos. Rarnhill Adamson and Cyril Tanner, solicitor, entered the water, the third, Miller, remaining in the boat. The bathers made to swim across, Adamson remarking that although he could not swim well, he thought he could manage the distance. When about half-way across Tanner noticed his companion in difficulties, and teiurning to him advised him to put his hands on his shouldcTS for help. Adamson in his excitement sprang on Tanners back, and both went down. Tanner after a struggle got clear and came to the surface somewhat exhausted. Adamson was not seen again alive, his body being recovered about two hours after. The fatality is a vety sad affair. Adamson, who was the son of one of earliest managers in this town for the Bank of New South Wales, and nephew of Mr Barnhill, of Castlerock, was eighteen years old, an only son, and was in the office of the New Zealand Lorn and Mercantile Agencv Company, His father is incapacitated for business, and the youth was the hope of the family.
