The last reports from (he Kimberley goldfields state that no permanent field has yet been discovered; hitherto only prospecting has been carried on. Diggers continually arrive at Derby and Cambridge Gulf from the goldfields, some of them bringing a fair amount of gold. The diggers are in good health. Business at Derbv and Cambridge Gulf is dull. The steamship Wairarapa has sailed for Auckland. (Received December 3, 1 a.m.) The Hon. F. M. Darloy, Q.C., will be sworn in as Chief Justice on TuesI day next. Sir Patrick Jennings has expressed his approval of Mr Gillies' proposal to hold an International Exhibition at Melbourne in 1888. Brisbane, December 2. Parliament was prorogued to-day by the Acting-Governor. Adelaide, December 2. The bank at Teetulpa has purchased 300 ozs. of gold from diggers in the neighbourhood since Monday last. Water is reported to be very scarce on the goldfield. Melbourne, December 2. The s.s. South Australia, which arrived to-day from Adelaide, brought 100 returned diggers from Teetulpa goldfields, (Received December 3, 1.5 a.m.) December 3. It is stated that a thousand men are waiting at Adelaide owing to the short supply of water at Teetulpa. The Legislative Council last night passed a bill providing for the preliminary expenses of the Exhibition of 1888, which is in celebration of the Australian Centenary. The proposal meets with the approval of the general public, but the decision of Chambers of Commerce and manufacturers is awaited. ' + THE KIMBERLEY. The Sydney Morning Herald's correspondent telegraphs -from Port Darwin that hundreds of diggers are regularly leaving Kimberley. Nothing is doing in alluvial mining, but he expects the reefs will yield good returns; about 500 men will see the season through. The field will thus be thoroughly tested. On the other hand a telegram from Wyndham, dated November 12, slates that two men have brought in 200 ozs., of gold, and report prospects of diggers at Kimberley as brighter. The Government Resident at Wyndham telegraphs as follows :—" Nice samples of gold come down from the field. Altogether since toy arrival 1901bs. of gold have been brought in." The si earner South Australia, which has arrived at Adelaide from Freemantle, had aboard as passengers for Melbourne and Sydnev a number of returned diggers from Kimberley. They gave n do'eful accodnt of their experience. W. Bracb, a practical digger from Sydney, iuformed a representative of the Advertiser that he and his mate, as the result of four weeks' assiduous digging, had obtained only llozs. At another place, where the country was reported to be very rich, they got only 3J<l\vts. as the result of their labour. Water was scarce, and a geueral state of wretchedness prevailed amongst the diggers. The goldfields are described as a failure.
