Christchurch, November 30
At the adjourned inquest on the body of Joseph Amos Wolsey, whose death was supposed to have been accelerated by injuries received in a fight with another lad, a verdict of death from natural causes (peritonitis) was returned. The jury did not attach blame to anyone in their verdict. December 1. A rumour was circulated in town today to the effect that Thomas Hall had burst a blood vessel and dropped dead in the Timaru Courthouse. It was soon published that the rumour had no foundation, and the excitement subsided. Dunedin, November 30. To day was generally observed as a holiday, and races, a lawn tennis tournament, bowling matches, and excursions were well patronised. Sir J. Vogel, who again attended the races to-day, leaves for the north tomorrow. The Hon. W. H. Reynolds will not be able to attend the Cabinet meeting on account of illness. Two accidents occurred to-day. A child was knocked down by a horse attached to a buggy, and sustained a serious wound in the head. Another young lad named Percy Smith was found in an unconscious condition on the Anderson’s B iy road. He is supposed to have fallen from a cliff. The boy died shortly after his removal to the hospital. Wellington, November 30. Major Boddam of the permanent militia staff has been appointed to the rank of Lieut.-Colonel in the New Zealand militia. The Mariposa with the London mails of the 4th of November left ’Frisco for Auckland on the 22nd of November, two days late. The Australia with the November colonial mails arrived at ’Frisco on the 28th, one day in advance of due date. December 1. The P remier has addressed a letter to the Premier of Canada directing
attention to the absence of interchange of trade with that dominion, and has also addressed a circular to the various Chambers of Commerce iu the colony suggesting that steps should be taken to foster such a trade.

When the Arawata left Fiji, the steam yacht Maachessa with Lady Dudley and party was at Suva and was to sail for Sydney. A shilling subscription fund was started successfully to procure a fullsized likeness oil painting of Sir William Fox for a presentation for the Art Gallery.
