Arsenal, the winner of the Melbourne Cup, was backed by the stable for £20,000, but as his gallops did not please, £SOOO of the money was hedged. Most of this was understood to be held by the owner and his friends. It was alleged that the horse had done badly at feeding, and three days before the race had fasted, for twenty hours. Arsenal had been backed for the double with Ben Bolt and Trident. Arsenal, as a two-year-old won the Criterion Stakes, five furlongs, at the V.A.T.C. Meeting 7st. 121b5.; Lady Claudia second, Bst. lllbs.; TJlahune third, 7st. 91bs. S.A.J.C. Melbourne Hunt Club Meeting, May 25th, third in Birthday Handicap, one mile, 6st. 81bs., won by Grace Darling, Bst. 41bs., Mentmore second, 6st, 7lbs. As a three-year-old Arsenal, in the V.R.C. Spring Meeting, on November 7th, was second in the Mares' Produce Stakes, one and a quarter miles, Bst. lOlbs., won by Remus, Bst. lOlbs., Ringmaster third, Bst. 101 bs. The win of Arsenal in the Cup, although be had been well supported by the public and the stable, is a good one for the bookmakers. The wiuner was previously owned by the Hon. W. Pearßon, but last year was purchased by Mr W. Gannon, of Sydney. Arsenal goes to Sydney immediately. He was bought as a yearling by Mr Pearson for £625, and was sold prirately to Mr Gannon. The horse was bred at Mr Reynolds' stables, New South Wales. Trident was out of the race two furlongs from home; the Derby punishment settled hia chance, although he ran a great horse. Trenton and Silvermine also thu splendidly. Mr White for two years has obtained fourth place with Derby winners, viz., Trident and Nordenfeldt. Trenton's performance iu running second under such a big wei»ht, is something to be rememberer]. He had 221bs. more on hia back than when he ran third last year.
