The Canadian Provincial Assembly will vote a contribution, as well as the Dominioß General Government. (Received October 8, 1.15 a.m.) Sophia, October 6. The garrison at Shumla have inquired of the Bulgarian Government if th By intend to make war against Russia. The Government denied having thought of such a proceeding, and condemned the inquiry. General Kaulbars, who is touring through Bulgaria and Roumelia, has been coldly received in these provinces. He ordered the Military Commandant at Rustcliuk to release the prisoners implicated in the deposition of Prince Alexander, at the same time offering him a reward for so doing. Freycinel, premier, has announced that the difficulty between France and Madagascar is on the poiut of being settled. Alexandria, October 7. Intelligence is to hand from Soudan that the friendly Arabs have captured the rebel position at Tamai, and killed two hundred rebels in the fighting which took place. ♦ [SPECIAL TO MELBOURNE AGE.] London, September 22. Truth advocates the establishment of a permanent Colonial Institute, as proposed by the Prince of Wales, provided that a suitable site be chosen, and that the "Exhibition gang" be excluded from its control or management, and that proper accounts in connection with the present Exhibition be furnished. A petition of the trade societies in Sydney against the policy of State assisted immigration from England to the Australian colonies has been presented to the House of Commons by Mr Thomas Burt. | Mr Parnell, in a lecture which he has delivered on Ireland, strongly deprecated the extensive emigration that had for some years been going on to the great injury of the nation. September 23. The Pall Mall Gazette publishes an account of an interview between a member of its staff and Mr Norton. Mr Norton eulogised Sir H. Parkes, and stated that the colonies were opposed, both to the cession of the New Hebrides to France, and the proposal for the establishment of Imperial federation. Mr Norton has requested an interview with Mr Stanhope, and it is probable that the request will be granted. September 24. The Republique Francaise, in an I article dealing with the French occupation of the New Hebrides, declares I that it is impossible that France can evacuate the islands, while the British man-of-war Albatross is engaged burning the natives' villages. The Morning Post publishes a statement this morning to the effect that it understands that the French Cabinet will very shortly arrive at an important decision regarding the New Hebrides. The matter, it says, is to bo finally dealt with at the npxt meeting of the French Cabinet. In diplomatic circles generally it is believed that the annexation of the islands by Fiance is imminent.
