Messrs Bnrgoyno, the well-known wine growers, threaten an action for libel against the Adelaide Exhibition Commission for posting up a cartoon which appeared in the Melbourne Punch, at the office of the Commission. The whole of the Victorian beer exhibits are now exhausted, and nearly all the colonial wine (some 21,000 gallons in all) received at the Exhibition has been sold. October 2. It is reported that a Company to purchase the Cumberland mine, on the Etheridge Goldfield, Queensland, will be floated shortly, with a capital of £IBO,OOO. A company to purchase the Livingstone mine at Charters Towers is in the market for .275,000, and the Canadian mine in the same district is offered for £70,000. The Bank of South Australia has declared a dividend of 6 per cent., and a considerable amount has been carried forward to provide for doubtful debts. Sir Cunliffe Owen states that the annual payment of the colonies towards the Imperial Institute will depend upon the number of members who contribute. The Rev. Field Flowers Goe, M.A., who has accepted the Bishopric of Melbourne, is a gentleman possessed of large private means, and is a very eloquent preacher. He is a very generous man, and has expended among the poor of his congregation the whole of his stipend. The curates of the district attached to St. George's Church, of which Mr Goe was rector, ate of opinion that he is highly pleased with the appointment. A serieß of meetings of experts is being arranged to practically test the quality of the various wood exhibits at the Indian and Colonial Exhibition, and the first trial will be made at the works of Messrs Ransome, Sims and Co., Chelsea. Mr J. Norton, delegate of the Sydney Trades and Labour Council, is organising a Conference on the question of State-aided emigration, and has invited delegates from all artizans' societies to be present. October 3. Mr Handford has been appointed Secretary to the British Commission of the Jubilee Exhibition.
