FIGHTING IN BURMAH.

It is reported, in a telegram from the Rangoon correspondent of the Times, that on the 26th of July Lieutenant Huggins, of the 21st Madras Native infantry, surprised and attacked the insurgent chief Hlaoo while engaged in burning the village of Kanbyoo. Tho enemy’s loss was 150 killed and wounded. Major Pearse, of the Somersetshire Light Infantry, has captured Magye, a village near Ava, killing 13 and capturing 37 insurgents. The Yemathen district is very disturbed The insurgents attacked Ningyan, and succeeded in burning some houses. Numerous skirmishes have occurred near Ningyan. On the 21st 200 men and two guns defeated 1000 insurgents. Our loss was two killed, eight wounded. The engagement took place in a thick jungle. The enemy fought obstinately, and availing themselves of cover, reached within 30 yards of the guns. The 16th Madras regiment, 600 strong, has been sent to Ningyan. As the road is closed the troops had to ascend the Sittang, and left Tonnghoo in a flotilla of 80 boats. Sir Charles Bernard has returned to Mandalay. Mr Burgess, commissioner of Mandalay, was to start on Wednesday to assume his duties. »Mr Power, a Bengal civilian, is appointed commissioner of the Miuhla district of Upper Burmah. The condition of Lower Burmah is improving. The Pagan correspondent of the Times telegraphed:—On the 30lh of July a strong body of insurgents led by a Phoongyee, named Boh Oudama, descended from the hills and attacked the military post at Salenmyo, on the western bank. The insurgents failed to cany our stockade, and surrounded Salenmyo. Lieutenant Cotton, commanding at Salenmyo, signalled for assistance, and two columns were sent to his relief from Sinbnyyoon and Mimbu. On August 1 the Sinhuyyoon column reached Salenmyo. Major Atkinson, of the Hampshire regiment, Was shot through tho head and killed while leading the attack on tho stockade erected by the insurgents. After .some sharp fighting, during which four Europeans ami four sepoys were wounded, Borne severely, at the stockade, the insurgents were defeated with very severe loss. The Mimbu column, under Briga-dier-General Low, arrived too late. On the same date an insurgent hand, part of the force which attacked Salenmyo,

burned Thaobyn, within a mile of the Sinbuyyoon military post. The country is very disturbed. The cholera has broken out at Mandalay, where Colonel Knox, late of the Somersetshire regiment, has died of it.
