A RAILWAY BETWEEN MELBOURNE AND ADELAIDE.
Mr C. H. Mathers, of the firm of Mathers and Co., who lately performed the railway journey between Melbourne and Adelaide, states that he left Adelaide at 6.50 a.m. and, after a journey of 183 miles, arrived at Border Town at 2.10 p.m. the same day. Leaving there at 4 p.m. by the train of the contractors, Messrs. Millar Brothers, he travelled 78 miles over the unballasted section of the line, and arrived at Diraboola at a little after 9 p.m. Ordinary first and second class carriages are run as on the other parts of the Victorian lines. The night is spent at Dimboola, and at 10.35 a.m. the train leaves for Melbourne, a distance of 250 f miles, anivingat 10.51 p.m. the same day. The actual travelling time is thus about 26 hours, the delay of the night prolonging the trip to abont 38 hours. When the section of the liue between Border Town and Dimboola is complete, and it is expected to be opened in two or three months, the through journey of 511 miles will probably be completed by express in seventeen hours. If the arrival of the express at Melbourne is made to suit the departure of the express for Sydney the through journey from Adelaide to Sydney—a distance of 1188 miles—will be possible in thirty-six hours. For the first-class through journey from Adelaide to Melbourne the fare is £4 4s, and £3 3s second-class.
