LETTER FROM CAMBRIDGE GULF.
Messrs Jakins «nd Wilcox, produce merchants, Caslie] street, Christchurch, have received a letter from Cup'ain Sinit.li, of l\\r. barque Notem, which vessel arrived at Cambridge Gti f on July 30th with a cargo of produce from Auckland. r l'he lett<;r is date/I Catnl..i.!»rt Gulf, July 31st, and Captain Sinilh slates that he found the reports fV'Dii the goldnVld.s very di.Hcoimi<'iri<r - thai there was not sufficient gold there to warrant a rash. There are twelve, stores at the Gulf, which are full. No cargoes are selling, and apparently ther* is no monev. Theie is also r :;i..M.mi-i;<-.i.i>;e. i'-.nr hotels, iliieo auc--,ion-ruoms, a Jio-pii.il, and about sixty tents. (Jnstoms duties are excessive, and Captain Smith quotes as
follows:—l2| per cent, on timber; £1 per ton on flour; 3d per lb on bacon and cheese; 10s per ton on bran and potatoes; 12a 6d on chaff; 4d per bushel on oats. The thermometer registered 95° in the shade. About 300 men were begging for passages to anywhere, having no means whatever. The Notoro took a large number of passengers from the Gulf to Perth, at which port Messrs Jakins and Wilcox have been advised aha arrived on September 2nd.
