MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The monthly meet; g of the Knraara School District Committee was held in the Town Hall on .Monday evening 6th itißt.; present—The Chairman (Mr R. J. Seddon), Messrs P. Banowman, Jamieson, Munro, Voysey, and Campbell (Hon. Sec). l The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The outward correspondence was read and apptoved of. The inward correspondence was read and received, and considered. In reply to an application from Mr R. E. Wy'de, it was. resolved that a testimonial be given to him, signed by the Chairman on behalf of the Commit toe. Mr R. J. Seddon applied for the use of a portion of the ground at the rear of the head teacher's rssidence, subject to consent of the head teacher. He had repaired the fence, cleared the ground, and spent some .£lO in draining Hnd sewing grass seed upon it.— Leave was g.anted until the ground was required. Inspector Smith's Reports on the Public Schools in the Kumara district were read. They were considered very satisfactory; and it was resolved that the reports be given to the editor Kumara Times, requesting their publi-

cation. It was also resolved that copies bo sent to the teachers, with the thanks of the Committee for the very satisfactory state of the schools under their charge. Reports from the head teacher on the irregular attendance of some of the school children were handed in, and read. It was resolved that they be handed to the local paper for publication ; also that the parents and guardians be informed that the compulsory clauses of "The Education Act" will be put in force against them if there is not a great improvement in the attendance in the future. It was further resolved that a notice be inserted in the Kumara Times calling the attention of parents and guardians of children in the Kumara School District to the Act, and especially to clause 6 of " The Education Act Amendment Act, 1885;" and that the teachers be instructed to inform parents and guardians who are in the habit of keeping children at home to get firewood, &c, that they will be the first to be proceeded against under this Act. In reference to the building vote, it ■was resoved that a Committee be formed, consisting of Messrs Barrowman, Munro, Voysey, and Jamieson, to consider, and report to next meeting, on the requirements of the schools. The Chairman and Secretary were authorised to make the necessary financial arrangements. Mrs Lamason was appointed care-! taker of the Kumara School; at 10s per week. In the event of her refuaal { to act, the same offer to be made to Mrs James. Small accounts to the amount of £2 3a were passed for payment. The Secretary reported having received the sum of £3 4s from the head teacher, the same beiDg payments by the school children for tl\e purpose of procuridg fuel. This concluded the business of the meeting.
