BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Borough Council was held in the Town Hall on Thursday evening; present—His Worship the Mayor (H. Burger, Esq.), Councillors G. Anderson, Olden, Killeen, Ziegler, M'Hroy, Mulvihill, Jorgensen, and Maloney. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. The outward correspondence was read and received, and the inward correspondence read, and received and considered. Letter from the Hospital Trustees asking the Council to cause an approach to be made to the ground of the Hospital Reserve on which is being erected the Surgeon-Superintendent’s residence.—On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr, Olden, the letter was referred to the Public Works Committee, with power to act. Letter from the Department of Trade and Customs, enclosing an extract from the Gazette of the 19th August, containing an Order in Council declaring dynamite and lithofracteur, also all light mineral oils such as painters’ spirits, eupione, benzine, gasoline, and light naphtha, and kerosene, to be “specially dangerous” within the meaning of “The Dangerous Goods Act, 1882;” and to the granting of licenses by the local authorities for the storage of such goods,—On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr. M'Hroy, the letter was referred to the Public Works Committee to report. Letter from John Garvin, contractor, applying for concession of refund of £5 deposit, on account of work done. Cr. Mulvihill moved “ That the sum of £5 deposit be refunded to Mr Garvin,” Cr. Maloney seconded the motion. The Mayor moved an amendment “ That Mr Garvin’s letter be referred to the Public Works Committee, to report to next meeting.” Cr. Olden seconded the amendment. A division was taken, with the following result : —Ayes s—The Mayor, Crs, Anderson, Olden, Ziegler, and Jorgensen; Noes 4—Cis. Killeen, M'llroy, Mulvihill, Maloney. The amendment was then put as the substantive resolution, and carried. PUBLIC WORKS, The Town Clerk then read the Public Works Committee’s Report, dated 2nd September, as follows : “ Present—Crs, Ziegler (chair), Killeen, and the Mayor, “Your Commitee beg to report—- “ 1. That having visited the contract of R. Toms, Borough Reserve, found that the work was not done according to specifications, and recommended that notice be given to the contractors requesting them to finish the same at once, or that the Conncil will complete the work at their expense, “2. That the Committee have also examined the contract of J, Gilbert, Borough Reserve, and find that the work has been fairly done, with the exception of one or two roots, which have been pointed out to the contractor. “ 3. That the Committee have made inquiries with reference to the letter of Mr M'Glone, and consider that, under the circumstances, the day-labour man was justified in the action he took in the matter. “ 4. That tho contractors for felling the bush at the Borough Reserve are not making satisfactory progress with the work, and your Committee recommend that they be notified the necessi'y of putting on more men ; and that the timo penalties will be suiutly enforced
and deduced from the amount of contract. “5. That the Council be recommended to procure the necessary grass seed for sewing the grubbed ground.” The report was received and considered. Clause 1 was adopted as read. Clause 4 was adopted, and a Committee consisting of Cra. Mulvihill, Olden, Killeen, and the Mayor appointed to procure the seed. TENDERS. The Council here adjourned for twenty minutes to consider tenders for forming and metaling the Borough boundary road, with leave to sit again. On resuming, The Town Clerk reported that the Council, in Committee, recommended that the tender of L. J. Spyer, being the lowest, be accepted for forming and metaling the boundary road. The report was adopted, and the tender accepted. Or. Maloney called the atention of the Council to a culvert in Union street that required repair. The matter was referred to the Public Works Committee. This concluded the business of the meeting.
