[UNITKD PRESS ASSOCIATION^ Auckland, August 12. The American warship Mohican is expected from Fiji on the 20th. The Janet Nicoll arrived from the Islands. After leaving Tonga she visited the new volcano island. Large vo'umps of smoke went issuing from the crater, and there were hundreds of rents in the earth. Daniel Blackwood the second engineer, died on the voyage She heard nothing of the Sovereign of the Seas, or of Caffrcy and Peno, at tho Islands. Port Chalmers, August 12. The R.M.S. Kimutaka reached the Heads at 6 a.m. to-day after a fine weather passage of 39 days 4 hours and 40 minutes from Plymouth, her detention at Madeira and Capetown being 14 hours 15 minutes, making her actual steaming time 38 days 14 hours minutes. Dunedin, August 12. A heavy slip took place on the mil. way a mile south of Goodwood. The Christchurch express train was not able to get through, and the passengers had to be transferred to the train on the south side of the slip. August 13. A young man named Jas. Annnn was drowned to-day in the Waikouaiti I River. The body has not yet been recovered. [ Wellington, August 12. The Gazette notifies the appointment of the Hon. Col. Brett as colonel in the New Zealand militia. Mr Eustace Brandon, who has occupied the position of Examiner of Titles for some years, died this morning of infiamation of the lungs. He had been ailing for some time, but was only confined to his bed three or four days.
