At the funeral of one of the victims of the Belfast riots, a disturbance occurred which necessitated the intervention of the police, who arrested twelve persons and subsequently dispersed the gathering. The Peninsular and Orieutal Company have given orders for the construction of two steamers of very large dimensions for the Australian service. The vessels will each be of 7000 tons register, and in their construction special attention is to be given to the attainment of a greater rate of speed than can be reached by any vessel now on the Australian line. August 4. It is reported that some of the extreme Irish have coalesced with a number of Nihilists, and are conspiring to carry on a dynamite war with England. In consequence of this, Russian vessels arriving in England are now searchingly overhauled. Earl Aberdeen, having by the resignation of Gladstone's Ministry vacated his position as Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland, left Ireland yesterday. His popularity was unmistakeably shown by the immense crowds that witnessed his departure and vociferously cheered him and Lady Aberdeen. The ovation is said have been unequalled in Dublin. J. Redmond, M.P., and W. O'Brien, M.P., have been appointed delegates at the approaching National League Convention at Chicago. Fiesh revelations have just been made in the Law Courts of the immoral tone of the English aristocracy. The husband of Violet Cameron, a popular London actress, being suspicious of her fidelity, followed her to Newcastle-ou-Tyne, and entered a hotel where she had taken lodgings, and found her with the Earl of Lonsdale. A stormy scene ensued, which ended by the Earl kicking ont the husband. On the following day Lord Lonsdale appeared in the Police Court, and was fined for assault. [special to press association.] London, August 5. Mr John Waddington's Syndicate, which has undertaken the construction of a railway from Guilford to Geraldtown. Western Australia, proposes to transfer the concessions received by them for its construction to a company with a capital of half a million with the same directors as at .present. M'Farlane, Strange, and Co., Limited, gas and water pipe manufacturers, have received a contract for the supply of five thousand tons of pipes for Newcastle, New South Wales. George Coppin has arranged to take Miss Minnie Palmer, the well-known actress, on a tour through Australia. A numher of colonists inspected the Channel Tunnel, and Sir Saul Samuel spoke in eulogistic terms of the work. A depntatiou from the Federation League has been appointed to ask Lord Salisbury to convene a Conference, or appoint a Royal Commission, to report on the possibility of concerted action being taken in regard to defences, and t<> promote a closer union of the Empire. Forty members of Parliament will accompauy the deputation. August 8. It is reported that Bishop Kennion, of Adelaide, has been offered the vicarage of Blackburn, assisting Bishop Moor house. The Hon. E. Stanhope has informed M. Waddington that the colonies are concerned at the permanent character of the barracks erected by the French troops in the New Hebrides. August 9. The Times referring to the proposal to establish a penny postal service with Australia considers that the idea is perfectly feasible provided that the rate of speed demanded of the mail steamers is made slower. The postal authorities are, however, adverse to the scheme. The Blenheim art collection has realised £350,000. John Roberts, jun., the champion billiard player, scored a thousand points in an hour and twelve minutes, which is «aid to be the best performance on record.
