The second reading of the ltepresontation Bill was carried last night without a division. On the motion for its committal to-morrow, Mr Seddon moved to insert that day six months, but was ruled out of order. The question was then put with the following result :—.Ayes] 39; Noes, '29. The death is announced, at the ripe old age of T'l, of Mrs Thomas Council, the widow mother of Mr Thus. Council, late acting manager of the Bank of New Zealand in this town. Hallelujah Lasses and Soldiers will be present, under the command of Captain J Aston and Lieutenant Ellis, of Hokitika. After the tea, a "lufrednow" meeting will be held, commencing at 8 p.m., the admission to which will be free, although a collection will be made towards the expenses of the mission in Kumara. A large attendance is expected. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Westland County Council, which should have been held yesterday, lapsed for want of a quorum. The members present were Messrs Dungan, Grimmond, Hansen, and Daly. Tenders for supplies to the Hospital are advertised to-day. A schedule of the articles to be tendered for can be seen on application to the Secretary, Mr R. E. Wylde. Tenders close at 8 p.m. on Tuesday next, 17th inst. The Kumara Quadrille Club will hold their usual Assembly at the Adelphi Theatre to-morrow evening, at eight o'clock. St. Mary's Industrial Home, a fine new building on the property recently acquired for the Home at Stoke, near Nelson, is now approaching completion, being announced to be opened by Bishop Redwood, of Wellington, on Sunday next, the 15th inst. The building will have a very imposing appearance ; and, the Mail states, there is a fine landed property attached to it, consisting of some 400 acres, the whole of which is capable of great improvements, and in the course of a few years, when the trees have grown up, this estate promises to be one of the show sights of Nelson. The farm should also prove highly remunerative with a gang of 150 boys to work upon it for a short time every day. The cost of the land and building when completed will very closely approach £7OOO. A Mr M'Rae who paid a visit to St. Mary's Orphanage, Nelson, the other day, like all other visitors ascended the ! tower, taking with him a favourite greyhound, which, on descending, he did not observe he had left behind. The dog, it appears, became frantic with excitement, and must have climbed up and looked over the parapet just in time to see his master driving away. With one bound it cleared the wall and landed on the ground 80 feet below, shattered and bruised and with its two forelegs broken, so badly wounded in fact, that it had to be shot immediately to put it out of its pain. A race from Hobson's Bay to Port Philip Heads took place between the Rotomahana and Adelaide on the 27th ult The latter is the boat which had the race with the Wairarapa some two years ao-o. The boats on this occasion did not start exactly together, the Rotomahana being detained for her clearance. The Adelaide | left Williamstown at two o'clock, and the Rotomahana about twenty minutes later. The former passed Queenscliff at 3.30, and the Rotomahana at 3.57, so that as nearly as possible it was an equal contest. The distance is thirty-four miles, and was done in four minutes under two hours. "Puff," in the Evening Press, thus rather unkindly satirises the Premier's illness:—" Talking about port, I hear Stout's got the gout!" " Yes, poor chap, but what's warse, he hasn't earned it!" "No he's a teetotaller, is'nt he V "Strictly; touches nothing but temperauce drinks ; yet he had a bad attack some | years ago, and now he's got another !" "Very strange! How do you explain it ?" Mr Stout had the gout, Sir Robert has it too, The reason why, it must come out, 'Tis chacun a son gout! What caused the enemy to cum, 'Tis but aoo widely known ; 'Twas not by drinking wine or rum, But too much Zoedoue ! Our Tuapeka contemporary learns that the Chinaman referred to a few days ago as about to enter a suit for divorce against his wife, and another Chinaman as co-respondent, has been dissuaded from his course. John found that the preliminary expenses were very heavy, and naturally concluded that if the subsequent expenses were anything in proportion he would not only lose his wife but everything belonging to him. A. J. R. Hodges, of Sydney, has failed for £119,970, and all the assets he has to place before his creditors is £5 ! Mr L. Seebeck being appointed agent here for a Home Jewellery Factory has now on view a very fine selection of the most modern designs of Jewellery, at low prices.—[A Dvr.
