BOARD OF EDUCATION.
The "Westland Board of Education met at Hokitika on Tuesday, at 8 p.m.; present Messrs Grimmond (chair), Rose, Rae, Jack, and M'Whirter. The minutes of previous general and of special meetings were read and confirmed, and the outward correspondence read and approved. The Times reports as follows in reference to matters affecting this part of the district. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From the Treasury, advising remittance.—Received. From Kumara Committee, asking for a supply of disinfectants.—Left to the Secretary. From Goldsborough Committee, forwarding report aud statement, and explaining items.—Received. From Staffoid Committee, nominating James Davidson as pupil teacher to the Stafford School.—Received ; appointment made to date from July 1. From luspector, drawing attention to the fact that the teacher at the Lower Kokatahi school had left his residence and was keeping an hotel in the district.—Received.—Mr Rae thought this was a matter which should not pass unnoticed. It happened a short time ago that one teacher was behind and the other in front of the bar, drinking.— Resolved, that the Kokatahi Committee be informed that the teacher of the lower school is keeping a public house, and that the Board cannot allow him to retain his appointment if Buch a state of things continues. From E. B. Dixon, asking for a bonus for the successful obtaining of E certificate by the Misses E. Ecclesfield and Esther Ward.—Received, the Inspector to report. From George Dyer, Olira Gorge, asking if teacher could teach hid children on half-time arrangement.—Received; resolved that arrangement could Dot bo made. MISCELLANEOUS. ' The Inspector's report on the teaching stafi was received, and ordered to be considered by the Board in committee at next meeting. Mr Jack, pursuant to notice, moved, "That all former resolutions of the Board declining t,> p.iy r,\ portion <£ the old liabilities of ccriwjiUeau be raaoijided, aud that «. gmut of £1 for
£1 be made on all subscriptions and other funds raised for the purpose of liquidating ibis liability, and that the Inspector ascertained the amount required." The motion was not seconded, and, after much discussion, Mr Jack, by leave, withdrew his resolution, and Mr M'Whirter moved that a legal opinion be taken, which was seconded by the chairman and carried. The Board then went into committee to deal with tenders and pass accounts, and this being done the meeting adjourned.
