Dr. Young, Superintendent of the Auckland Asylum, resigned on the ground of a promise of an increase of salary not being carried out. He claims £6OO a year, the same as southern superintendents. He gets £4OO at present. Nathaniel Wilbert, living alone in a hut at Maretaki, was found dead, it is believed from heart disease. WRECK OF THE STEAMER PELHAM. Bluff, August 9. The s.s. Pelham, from Greymouth, with a full cargo of coal, ran ashore at the Pilot Station, Bluff, at 7 o’clock this morning before she had the pilot on board. She struck about the same place that the s.s. Scotia did some 23 years ago, and little hopes are entertained of her being got off as it was at the top of high water when she struck. She now lies with her broadside to the sea and with a heavy swell running past. There is a large hole amidships, and the water is up to the combings of I lie main hatch It is expected that when the tide fall the vessel will break up. The effects of the captain and crew and all moveables arc
now being landed at the Pilot Station. The Pelham is owned by Kenuedy Bros., Greymouth. She left Greymouth at 5.30 a.m. on Saturday, and experienced light variable winds after crossing the bar, with rainy weather; There are no hopes of saving her owing to the cargo of coal and the high swell. The hull is insured in the National for £4250; but this is reinsured (excepting £250) in other Colonial offices. The coal is uninsured. The Pelham is 238 tons register and valued at about £BOOO. She was in charge of Captain Greagor, and carried 32 of a crew.
