In reply to an inquiry wo made by telegraph yesterday afternoon, we are pleased to state that Mrs Seddon replied last evening that Mr Seddon's health is improving. This will be highly satisfactory to their many friends. It will be seen by our Parliamentary report that there was u.iiiger, if Mr Seddon had not been present yesterday in the House, that Captain Siltter may have carried his proposal to strike out or reduce the vote for the maintenance and working of the sludge-chan-nel, which, proposal, however, was lost on the voices. The installation of officers of the Hokitika branch of the Independent Order of Good Templars took place on Thursday evening at the Manchester Unity. Hall, Hokitika. The installation ceremony was performed in an able manner by Bro. D. M'Gregor, L.D. The following officers were installed :—Bro. Satchell, W.0.T., Bro. E. Gibson, V.T., Bro. A. Aitken, W.S., Bro. J. Perkins, W.F.S., Sister Downey, W.C., Bro. D. M'Gregor, W.M., Sister Jolly, L.H.S., Sister Bootsma, R.H.S., and Bro. Bead, J.G. Mr. G. A. Sala, in declining to stand for the Hornsey Division of Middlesex for a seat in Parliament, writes as follows :—" Had your invitation been addressed to me six months ago, I would willingly have sought the suffrages of your electorate, aud had I been returned, I would have done my best in the House of Commons to advocate and vindicate that great Liberal cause for which, for more than thirty years, I have been an earnest, albeit an obscure, supporter in the columns of the London Daily Press. But a dreadful domestic bereavement, with which I was stricken on December 31st, 1885, has left me a heart-broken and desolate old man, utterly without ambition, and totally indifferent to the pros and cons of party strife. I have no heart to go into Parliament, and I should do no good to my constituents if I went there." Messrs H. Goulston and Co. beg to draw the attention of the public to the sales by Dutch auction of the balance of their stock of drapery and clothing, on Friday and Saturday nights, commencing at 7 o'clock sharp. This being a positive unreserved sale, customers will be able to get goods regardless of cost.—[Advt.J Good Resolutions.—At the commencement of every new year hundreds and thousands of our young men—and old as well—form resolutions for their guidance for the coming year. Many keep them, while others break them. To such we wish to give a word of advice. In order to sustain your determination of leading a better life in the future you should use Hop Bitters. The judicious use of Hop Bitters strengthens, cleanses, and purifies the stomach, bowels, blood, liver, nerves, and kidneys, and is just what you want to build up and invigorate yourself.—Greenbush, U.S.A., Dem.
