[united press association.! Wellington, August 4, A letter Ims been received by Mrs Levy from ber husband, who left by the Hauroto. The letter has not been made public, but as far as can be gathered, it is of an extraordinary description, reading more like the page of a novel. It is understood he reiterates what was contained in the anonymous letter to the Sydney police, and goes on to say that he was followed about by a strange man, whose very glance was sufficient to make him tremble. He was in a stnpid condition ever after his arrival in Sydney; and it is said that he endeavored to find his mother, who '.vas over in Sydney, but his memory appeared completely gone and he could not recollect anything, either as to how he had gone to Sydney or as to the address of his mother. The letter is couched in affectionate terms, and says that none who knew him could think him guilty of wilfully deserting his family.

August 5. Cross actions of a heavy character are now pending between Ward, of Blenheim, and the Bank of New Zealand. The bank has sued Mr Ward for a large sum of money alleged to be due, and Ward sues the hank on two alternative claims of £55,000, as damages for alleged breach of covenant in relation to transactions connected with two runs in the Marlborough district. Travers is acting as solicitor for Ward, and Bnck'ey, Stafford, and Barton for the hank. Writs on both sides have been secured, and certain legal and technical points are to be brought before the Supreme Court here in banco on Wednesday next. Christchurch, August 4. At an inquest on an infant, seven months old, named Florence Elizabeth Cook, it appeared that the child had died from suffocation induced by a bad cold. Dra. Bussell and Deamer were sent for about five v o’clock in the morning, and both declined to attend. The latter was an old men and said he was nearly dead himself. Dr. Russell gave as his reason for not attending, that he hrd been called to scores of such cases and never had his fee paid. He had lately restored a child from drowning, and had not even been thanked. Had the fee been offered, he would have attended, though he did not in this instance ask for his fee, as it was usual for medrcal men to do. The jury returned a verdict of death from natural causes, and added as a rider, “ That if Dr. Russell had attended, in all probability the child might have been saved, and Dr, Russell’s conduct was deserving of the severest censure.” One juryman dissented from the rider. This morning the prosecutrix and witnesses in a recent case of alleged rape by an old Maori, were charged at the Police Court with conspiracy, and remanded for a week. Bail was allowed. It is alleged the witnesses perjured themselves, their object being to obtain the old Maori's property by compelling him to marry the prosecutrix. There was no inquest in the case of the sudden death of the wife of the Rev. A. M’Oalhim, Dr Kenny stating that death was from heart disease.
