THE COLONIAL TREASURER AND THE WELLINGTON ADVERTISER. THE MAORI TROUBLE. HOKITIKA HARBOUR BOARD DEPUTATION. [from our own correspondent.] Wellington, July 20. The Colonial Treasurer Ins laid a criminal information against the proprietor of the Wellington Advertiser. There has been no more Maori trouble. Warrants have been issued for a large number of the trespassers. The Hokitika Harbor Board deputation arrived per southern steamer yesterday, and to-day, they, with the Hon. J. A. Bonar, and Messrs Bevan and Seddon, held a meeting and decided to ask the Premier, the Colonial Treasurer, and tlm Minister of Mines to meet them oa Thursday next.

Wellington, July 19. The Governor has invited the members of both Houses of the Legislature to meet him this afternoon and discuss the Tarawera relief question. Later. At tho invitation of the Governor, some 40 or 50 members of both Houses had a conference with him this afternoon on the subject of the Tarawera disaster. Colonel Brett moved, and Mr Dargaville seconded, that a committee he formed of the Governor, the two Speakers, and three members from each House to consider the best means of affording relief to the sufferers by the eruption. It was afterwards decided to add the Mayor and the Chairmen of the local bodies to the committee. It was suggested by his Excellency that a monster carnival might be held on Soames's Island in the harbor. The arrest of Te Whiti may be hourly expected, official instructions having been issued to that effect. Christchurch, July 19. George Tresgasser, an old man who lived by himself at Sydenham, was found dead in bed last night. He had not been seen since Wednesday last. DUNEDIN, July 19. Yesterday afternoon a box of rubbish in Mr M'Fadyen's boot shop, George street, was discovered on fire and put out at once. This morning it broke out again, and the place was gutted. James Dodd. a young man, appeared at the Police Court this morning, charged with attempted rape on Miss Bowers, in her house, Newton Road, last night. The lady is what is called an old maid, and was screaming for help. The case was remanded till Tuesday. Eleanor Brace, an unmarried woman of middle age, cut her throat with a r.zor at North Shore this morning. She bad shown signs of mental aberration. She will probably recover. Thomas Chambers, husband of the barmaid who attempted suicide yesterwas arrested today on a charge of forging and uttering a cheque on the Colonial Bank. July 19. Captain Webb, acting American Consul, has given orders for all of the Petrel seamen unwilling to go to sea to get a month's pay and discharge at Auckland. All except Joachim, a Portugese, accepted the offer. The costs of the prosecution will he defrayed by the American Government. The police raided the fruit shop of an old man named Charles M'Donald, and arrested the proprietor and six young girls. There were 20 hoodlums there. They also captured some packs of cards and a quautity of drink. Bail was refused lest some of the witnesses who are only ten yeai s old, should be tampered with as to the revelations. The North Shore shooting case is being heard at the Police Court to-day. Mrs Lunny, who is still weak from the wound, alleges that she was not unduly familiar with M'Gnire, but admits wanting to go to the Opera House with him and writing him a letter beginning " My dear George " and ending " Your darling Maggie." THE GOVERNMENT INSURANCE t PROPOSALS. ABOLISHING THE BOARD. AN ENORMOUS MAJORITY. Wellington, July 16. This evening the result of the poll on the Government. Insurance Association resolutions whs declared. On Mr Bell's resolution "That it is advisable that the Association should be returned to die charge of the Government," the numbers were given as follows: For, 3183 j against, 1508. On Mr Bell's alternative motion, " That the Board should be reduced to six members, of whom three should be elected, and another three should be the Solicitor-General, the Secretary to the Treasury, and either the Public Trustee or the Commissioner of Property Tax; three to be a quorum if the Chairman be present, or four if the Chairman be not present." The voting was For, 514; Against, 3796. On Mr Fisher's motions: Thnt the Central Board be re-consti-tuted; and that it consist of seven members, four to be elected by the policyholders, and three to be nominated by the Government; the three nominated members not to be officers of the Government." " (2.) That the Board so re-constituted shall elect its own Chairman." " (3.) That the honorarium be fixed at £IOO for each member of the Board, excent the Chairman

of Directors, who shall receive £3OO per annum." For, 1717 ; against,'26Bo. Several voting papers were informal, in consequence of policyholders either voting in the affirmative for the whole three resolutions, or voting in the negative for the three.
