Word has been received from Wright's survey party at Tongariro, confirming Hawke's statement as to Tongariro being active on the night of the Tarawera erupcion. The noises in the mountain were alarming, and the people were expecting an eruption every hour. Owing to the weather they have been unable to examine the mountain since. Christchurch, July 6. At the Supreme Court, Alexander M'Phial, for larceny, was sentenced to one year's imprisonment with hard labor; Nellie Mulholiand, charged with stealing from the person, and Louis Frances le Valliant, charged with larceny, were acquitted. At the Supreme Court this moruing Chalres Miller, for burglary, was sentenced to five years' penal servitude. Thomas Gillon, burglary, seven years' pennl servitude. James Shearer waß found guilty of robbery from the person and received five years' penal servitude. Oamaru, July 7. William Leitch, baker, committed suicide to-day at the Criterion Hotel, taking eight ounces of chlorodyne. He leaves a wife and five children. His life is insured in the Government Insurance Office for JJ2OO. New Plymouth, July 7. A sad occurrence happened this morning to a man named Hugh Bachelor. He went out in a boat with two others fishing, and when about a mile out he complained of being unwell, aud expired before the party could get back. It is supposed to have been heart disease. He leaves a wife and nine children.
