Seats in the last Parliament for the following electorates held by Liberals have been gained by Conservative candidates : —Chester East, Bedford, Dudley, Olapham, Eastern Islington, Southern Islington, Stepney, Bow, and Central Division of Glasgow. Gladstonites have secured Conservative seats at "West Wolverhamptom and Wednesbury; and Liberal seats for Blackfriars and Hutchisontown, Glasgow. B J. Coleridge and J. Mundella (President of the Board of Trade) (Liberals), and Messrs Howard Vincent, Ashmead-Barletfc and Stuart-Wortley (Conservatives), are reelected for Sheffield seats. Mr Graham Berry is shortly to confer with Lord Rosebery on the subject of mutual concessions between France and England, the principal object of which is to ascertain whether any arrangement likely to be be acceptable to both parties might be proposed, whereby France would evacuate her possessions in the Pacific on consideration of the English Government ceding to her territory elsewhere. June 28. The bestowal of the newly announced honours to colonists whs quite unexpected. Mr Berry and other gentlemen upon whom honours have been conferred, were ignorant that honours were to be given them until the fact was announced in the newspapers. The first official announcement they received on the subject was conveyed by an autograph letter from the Prince of Wales which subsequently reached them. Mr M'Millan, of Sydney, thought it would be dangerous to rush into an official scheme of federation, and held that the first scheme should be federal defence.
