A cablegram this afternoon states that the ex-King of Bavaria, who recently became insane and was deposed, committed suicide yesterday by throwing himself into the lake at Stamburg, a suburb of Munich, where he has been under restraint. One of his physicians who was in attendance, in attempting to rescue him, was also drowned. Prince Luitpold, uncle of the ex-King, has been appointed Regent of Bavaria. The ordinary meeting of the Hospital Committee will be held at the Town Hall this evening. At this meeting, we understand, the applications received for the office of surgeon-superintendent to the Hospital will be considered and dealt with. The population of the North Island by the new census is 247,404, exclusive of Maoris and shipping population. At last census (1881) it was 107,720. The number of persons on the Electoral Rolls is 63,503. In the North Island there are also 2630 Chinamen. The population of the South Island by the new census is 320,006 of whom 7/,320 are on the roll. The Union Company’s steamship Hauroto, which left Wellington on Monday, the 7th inst., for Sydney, with a number of passengers from Kumara bound for Kimberley, arrived at Sydney on Friday afternoon—a good passage of four days and a few hours. Commander Edwin wired at 11.25 to-to-day—“Bad weather may be expected between south-west and south and east, and weather much colder. Glass further rise.”
