SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The usual monthly meeting of the Kumara School District Committee was held in the Town Hall on Monday evening; present—Mr Voysey (in the chair), Messrs F. Bsrrownian, Campbel! (Hon. Sea), Munro, Jamieson, and W. S. Hanna. The minutes of the previous meetings were read and confirmed. The outward correspondence was read and approvedjof, and the inwaid read and received, and considered. SEWING. A letter, dated May 14, was read from the Central Board forwarding copy of Mr Seddon's proposal for the employment of special sewing mistresses in certain, schools in this district, and requesting the Committee to favour the Board with an expression of their views on the subject, in time for the next meeting of the Board, which would take place on Tuesday evening, the Bth inst. The following is a copy of the proposal referred to : That the Hokitika, Ross, and Kumara bchool Committees be authorised to recommend for appointment sewing mistresses to the Hokitika, Ross, and Kumara schools, at salaries not exceeding £2o per annum each. That the head teacher be notified to set apart one half day per week for the teaching of sewin« to girls in all Standards. In dealing" with applications, practical dressmakers and tailoresses will have the preference. It was resolved to reply to the Board that this Committee is in favour of Mr Seddon's proposals for the employment <>f special sewing mistresses in the schools named. A letter was read from Mrs Williams, applying to be allowed relief by voluutary aid in sewing lessons. It was approved of, and the request granted. MID-WINTER HOLIDAYS. A letter was read from the Secretary Central Board forwarding copy of a resolurion passed at a late meeting of the newly formed Teachers Association of Westland, and requesting the Committee to favour the Boaid with their opinion on the proposal therein contained, also in time for the meeting ••f the Central Board meeting last evening. The following is a copy of he proposal ; That as the annual examination of Schools is to be held this year two months earlier than it was last year and seeing that it will follow so closely'upon the mid-winter holidays, the members of the Central Board of Education be requested to allow of the postponement of the holidays till after the examination, at the option of the teachers.
It was resolved that the Board be informed that the Committee are in favour of the proposal of the Westland Teachers Association for the postponement of the mid-winter holidays til] after ihe examination, at the option of he teachers. REPAIRS. la reply to applications from the school teacher, Mr Mnnro was author, ised to have the chimney and windows at the Rnn«iriri School repaired. A letter from Mr Woodward in reference to repairs to the Kumara State School building and teacher's house was referred to the Central Board for its favourable consideration. CARETAKER. It was resolved that the caretaker get one month's notice to leave, and that applications be called for to fill the office. The Hon. Secretary submitted a copy of the Caretaker's duties, which were approved of. They are as follow : 1. The school to be well swept out every day. Desks also to be dusted. 2. At least one room to be washed out every week, ao that all the rooms may be I washed and scrubbed once a month. 3. Fires to be lighted every moraine when required. 4. Closets and lavatories to be kent clean, also towels. e 5. Windows to be cleaned when required. 6. All fires to be put out and left safe at night after school hours. Door to be locked every night. The duties were approved of. VISITING COMMITTEE. Messrs Campbell and flanna, the Visiting Committee for the month of of May, reported having visited the State School, and found every thin" satisfactory, ttll j the attendance good, *
An account for glazing windows was passed for payment. FIREWOOD TENDERS. Tenders for the supply of firewood, per cord, delivered, to the State School, were then opened, as follows : Birch. Rata. Mr L. J. Spyer 15s 29s Mr Joss Jovrgassy ... lis 6d 265. The tender of Mr Joss Jov;gassy was accepted. This concluded the business of the meeting.
