CORRESPONDENCE.
The Editor does not, necessarily, adopt the opinions expressed by correspondents. MR HAY AND MR MALCOLM. [to the editor.] Sir—ln the Greymouth Reading Room last Saturday I was turning over the pages of your paper when I came upon a couple of sentences in a letter from the Rev. G. Hay which much, very much, astonished me. These are they :—Mr Malcolm said at the Westland Presbytery “they would in six months have Mr Hay gnawing the nails of his fingers in regret for his opposition to the Rev. W. Douglas of Hokitika,” and “we will withhold his certificate, and then what will he do?” I am at a loss to understand why Mr Hay should thus speak of me ; for I used no such words, or any similar in meaning to them, either at a Presbytery meeting or anywhere else. If some one told him I had used them, he has been misinformed ; if no one told him, then . When will MiHay learn wisdom ?—I am, yours truly, , J. Malcolm. Brunnerton, June 7, 1886.
