THE NORTHERN TERRITORY GOLDFIELDS.
Mining in the Northern Territory of Australia seems profitable, judging from a telegram received in Adelaide on the 14th ult. From Mr Parsons, Government Resident at Palmerston. He says;—The following information re mining I have carefully obtained at first hand, or through wardens, and it may be published :—“ At Bridge Creek about forty Europeans are all making wages, and four alluvial claims have paid a dividend to each shareholder of £l2 per week. Other claims have done well, and one digger is reported to have 9S). weight of gold in his hut. The Chinese here have also obtained good gold on the old Britannia. The Chinese are also still working on Burgan’s Creek, Fountain Head, Sandy Creek, and Househildt’s Rush, but reliable information cannot be obtained, as they never admit they are getting gold. Two tons of stone from No. 1 North Union was crushed at Jansen’s Pine Creek battery last week, which yielded 370z5., and good stone is being obtained on several claims; but the battery at the Union is practically useless. Fitzgerald’s claim, Pine Creek, gave last week 1370z5. for 48 tons of stone. Christmas claim gave last year 3480z5. from 30 tons of stone; and Jansen informs me that the prospects are equally good for this year. Jansen has just struck a very rich leader, and has shown me large specimens studded with gold. Mount Wells, with 2000 tons of ore at grass, are stuck up through the breaking of a new fangled pump.”
